What is a Powder Photo Shoot

A powder shoot is where we take a black background and have someone stand in front of it and throw flour in interesting poses (or put flour in the hair like the one below in the pink leotard). It can sometimes take a few goes to get the hang of it, so for our powder photo shoots, I suggest you come at least 1-2 appointments before, so you can watch and have an idea how it works before your appointment.
As the flour gets into the air, we make sure we do it in a quite open environment and try to vent it out regularly, but if you have breathing difficulties like asthma, please make sure you bring your ventolin, just in case you need it.

Tips for a powder photo shoot

  1. If your asthmatic, bring your ventolin.
  2. Younger kids can do this to, but may not be able to do some of the more advanced poses.
  3. It’s plain white flour, on a black background. So for outfits, I find bright colours really pop and work the best, but as you can see below, white and lighter colours can also look wonderful.
  4. Come a few appointments early. You will be able to sit back and watch what some of the others do. It’s something most people haven’t done before, so it’s a good idea to watch what others are doing
  5. You have enough time to try lots of poses, so just have fun with it.
  6. For our shoot, we will have the photos we have taken during your session on a monitor so you can choose the ones you want. They look quite different edited (as the example below), so when trying to decide which ones to buy, try and focus on the movement, how the flour fans out, whether you can see your face (and like the expression).
  7. This is probably the photo shoot that people have the most fun, so just have fun out there.
